About Richard Green Ecology

As an independent ecological consultancy, we provide innovative expert services promptly and at reasonable rates. We are based in East Devon (near Exeter) but offer nationwide services.

Richard Green Ecology Ltd was formed in 2010 by Richard Green BSc(Hons) CEnv MCIEEM. Prior to this Richard worked as a Principal Ecologist/Environmental Scientist for a large multi-functional consultancy (for 9 years) and at the Environment Agency as a Conservation Officer (for 9 years).

We have a wealth and breadth of ecological knowledge. Having worked on both sides of the industry, we have developed a keen understanding of business needs and statutory requirements. Our people skills and customer care ensure that the needs of both the environment and the client can be met, and we have a proven track record of delivering successful and sustainable outcomes.

All of our technical staff are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.

Meet The team

Richard Green

Director

Richard is a Chartered Environmentalist with over 26 years’ professional experience in nature conservation and ecological consultancy. Richard has directed ecological inputs to numerous development projects, including major infrastructure, ports, highways, housing, commercial, renewable energy, minerals, conservation and domestic projects. He has provided witness statements and presented ecological evidence at Public Inquiries.

  • Habitats Regulations Assessment for projects and plans
  • Habitat and species surveys (protected species licences held for bats (England Levels 3 & 4 and Wales), Bat Mitigation Class Licence for England and HS2, hazel dormouse, barn owl, great crested newt, crayfish, badger class licence (CL32 to interfere with setts) and water vole displacement class licence (CL31)

William Dommett

Senior Ecologist

William has worked for Richard Green Ecology since graduating from his MSc in Environmental Consultancy in 2012. Project experience includes major and minor road schemes, residential developments, renewable energy, minerals, commercial and domestic schemes.

Sophie Duncan

Senior Ecologist

Sophie joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021. Sophie has a BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology and a MSc in Environmental Consultancy. Over the past four years and six seasons, Sophie has gained experience in ecological consultancy and has been a lead bat specialist in her previous roles, managing numerous large scale bat projects.

Rory Chanter

Senior Ecologist

Rory has worked for Richard Green Ecology since 2015. Rory has a wide range of experience in the ecological sector, having worked for conservation organisations, wildlife charities and ecological consultancies. He has worked on numerous projects, undertaking surveys and assessment, including highways, rail, commercial, minerals and domestic projects.

Jen Paget

Assistant Ecologist

Jen joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021. Jen has a BSc with Honours in Environmental Management and experience as a freelance assistant ecologist, having made a change of career from the financial services sector. She continues to work towards attaining protected species licences and has worked on numerous projects, undertaking surveys, assessment and project management, including highways, commercial, and domestic projects.

Ellie White

Assistant Ecologist

Ellie joined us in 2021 as a seasonal bat survey assistant, after gaining a first-class honours degree in Earth and Ocean Science she was made permanent as an assistant ecologist. She continues to develop the skills and knowledge needed as an ecologist whilst working towards her bat and dormice licences. Ellie is also a BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic and works closely with Operation Cetacean to protect Harbour porpoises in Torbay.

Tim Burton

Assistant Ecologist

Tim worked for Richard Green Ecology as seasonal bat surveyor in 2019 and was made permanent in 2020. He has a BSc with Honours in Environmental Sciences. Previous experience included dormouse survey and handling with the Devon Wildlife Trust, habitat management and species enhancement measures with Teignbridge Green Spaces and Sussex Wildlife Trust and species identification and surveying with Ambios.

Alex Poole

Assistant Ecologist

Alex joined Richard Green Ecology in 2020 as a Plymouth University MSc placement student and has been employed by us since then. He has since gained his MSc in Environmental Consultancy and continues to develop the skills and knowledge needed as an ecologist.

Jack Rivers

Assistant Ecologist

Jack joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021 after graduating from Aberystwyth University with a first-class honour’s degree in BSc Countryside Management. He has previously completed internships for the research department at the National Botanic Garden of Wales working on the Biophilic Wales project and assisted in rainforest restoration and monitoring schemes as a student intern at KOPEL in Borneo.

James Storey

Assistant Ecologist

James joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021 upon completion of his MSc in Biodiversity Conservation from Nottingham Trent University. Past experience includes bat activity surveys for a previous ecological consultancy and various voluntary roles with the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Bat Conservation Trust and People’s Trust for Endangered Species.

Kelsey Marrat

Assistant Ecologist

Kelsey joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021. She has a BSc (Hons) in Zoology and an MSc in Conservation Biology. Previous experience includes bat activity surveys for a different consultancy. She continues to gain the skills and knowledge needed to be an ecologist.

Fiona Coope

Business Support Officer

Fiona joined Richard Green Ecology as a seasonal bat surveyor in 2020 after graduating from University of Plymouth with a BSc (Hons) in Animal Conservation Science in 2019. Fiona has worked in multiple voluntary roles with the Devon Wildlife Trust, Critter Care Wildlife Rehab Centre (Vancouver) and Society for the Protection of Turtles (Cyprus).

Emma Ridley

Business Administrator

Emma recently joined Richard Green Ecology in July 2021. Emma gained a BA (Hons) degree in Media Communications at Gloucestershire University. Previously, working for large companies in the energy, telecommunications, accountancy and the health sector doing administration, marketing and customer service. Emma will be your first point of contact; providing you with a helpful, efficient and friendly service.

Louie Landesmann

Seasonal Assistant Ecologist

Louie joined Richard Green Ecology in 2021 as a Seasonal Bat Survey Assistant. He has a BSc with Honours in Physical Geography & Geology from Plymouth University and has since worked in water services and contaminated land. He has also volunteered on Mount St Helens Volcano in the United States, hosting educational talks on the geology and ecological recovery of the area.

Luke Edkins

Seasonal Assistant Ecologist

Luke joined Richard Green Ecology as a seasonal bat surveyor in 2021 and has since helped carry bat transect surveys and surveys of potential roost features (PRF’s). He is a fully trained arborist with a strong conservation background and has helped manage habitats on various protected sites. As of this year, he’ll be studying a degree in Environmental Science as he works towards a career in Ecology.
