Botanical surveys identify plant species to classify habitats, identify rare plants or invasive species, and are an important part of long-term monitoring of habitats. The most widely used habitat classification system is  UK Habitat Classification (UKHab). For particularly valuable habitats or where rare plant species may be present, more detailed botanical assessment may be required. We can undertake species specific surveys or obtain a more accurate and detailed picture of the plant communities using the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey technique. We can also undertake botanical surveys to identify non-native invasive plant species (INNS) (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Schedule 9) or plant species which could be problematic and costly for any future development of the site. We are experienced in undertaking detailed surveys of hedgerows which can also be important part of the habitat on a site and support a high level of biodiversity.

Our experience includes initial botanical surveys, through to mitigation, translocations, habitat creation and habitat management plans.

The optimum period for botanical surveys is in spring and summer but this can vary depending on the location or if a specific species is targeted.
