Training Courses and Natural England Licence Applications

Our training courses are designed to support ecologists working towards protected species survey licences, including dormice, great crested newts, and bats.

Natural England does not endorse or formally approve individual training courses. However, Natural England has confirmed that applicants may submit a training course certificate as part of their evidence when applying for a licence, provided the course and certificate meet their published requirements.

“As part of applying for a licence, an individual can provide a training course as part of their evidence to apply for a licence, and we will accept a training course if it contains all of the requirements listed on GOV.UK. All applications are reviewed individually on a case-by-case basis.” – Natural England email correspondence

Our courses and certificates are structured to meet these requirements, including:
• Species identification training
• Practical training in the relevant survey techniques
• Provision of a course certificate, which includes the delegate’s name, course title and content, course date, and the trainer’s name and signature. Please note that, if used as supporting evidence, the certificate must have been issued within the last three years.

All licence applications are assessed by Natural England on a case-by-case basis, and acceptance of any evidence cannot be guaranteed in advance. Applicants should ensure they meet all current Natural England licensing criteria at the time of application.
